Intention to Exit - Knock Knock Group Exhibition - Sept/Nov 2012, Cairns Art Gallery
Intention to Exit is a group exhibition examining social and natural frameworks. Systems and structures shape our social and cultural existence as well as being evident within our physical surroundings. Either inherent or learnt, these frameworks and conventions define us.
Drawing on personal symbolism, Rose Rigley purposely explores hidden memory structures with the intent of putting them on display. Utilizing books as a metaphoric vessels of memories, the artists deconstructs and reassembles these objects; examining the structures for storing these intangible moments at a cellular level, in the conscious and unconscious mind. Whether viewed in a snapshot recollection or as a distant blurred abstraction, these memories exiting their normal constraints form the basis of these works.
The artist also questions whether it is possible to remove these manifested frameworks without replacing them with more, slightly different, structures. Rigley ponders the ability of humans to act in a truly random anarchical pattern or if it is an inherent requirement to have structures and boundaries in order to function successfully.
